What's the actual difference between sulfate and sulfate-free shampoo?
Sulfates are strong detergents that create heavy lather and strip oil, dirt, and product buildup quickly, but they can also strip the hair's natural moisture and cause dryness or frizz over repeated use. Sulfate-free cleansers use gentler surfactants that clean the hair and scalp without stripping as much natural moisture, which tends to suit dry, curly, coily, or color-treated hair best. Neither is inherently "bad" — the right choice depends on hair type, scalp oiliness, and how much buildup a routine tends to create.
Why does sulfate-free shampoo lather less than regular shampoo?
Lather comes primarily from sulfates, so removing them naturally reduces foam even though the shampoo is still cleaning effectively. It's common for a sulfate-free shampoo to lather less on the first wash, when it's lifting buildup and product residue, and noticeably more on a second wash once that layer is cleared. Low lather is a formulation trait, not a sign the product isn't working.
How can you tell if a hair care routine is causing product buildup?
Common signs include hair that feels coated, weighed down, or less responsive to styling than usual; a shampoo that suddenly seems to lather much more than normal (buildup can trap it); or reduced curl definition and volume over time. Buildup is typically caused by silicones, heavy styling products, or hard water minerals that aren't fully removed by a regular wash. A clarifying or sulfate-free cleanse that targets buildup without over-stripping the hair is usually the fix.
If a shampoo lists "alcohol" on the ingredient label, how can you tell whether it will dry out your hair?
Check which specific alcohol is listed. Short-chain alcohols (ethanol, SD alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, alcohol denat.) evaporate fast and can be drying in higher concentrations. Longer-chain, fatty alcohols (cetearyl, cetyl, stearyl alcohol) are conditioning agents that actually help soften hair and lock in moisture — they just share the word "alcohol" in the name. A product using only conditioning alcohols shouldn't be avoided based on the ingredient label alone.
